This photograph, made by Jan Schüller, captures two couples on the deck of a ship, and it's like a little stage set for our imagination. The tones are muted, almost ghostly, which really emphasizes the texture of the paper it’s printed on. The way the light catches the edges of their coats, it makes you wonder about the weather that day. Is it a misty morning, or are they sailing into the sunset? There’s something so evocative about the way the figures are arranged. They're standing close together as if sharing a secret, but also looking out in different directions. It reminds me a little of the way Gerhard Richter used to take photographs and paint from them, blurring the details so that the images become about memory and time. It's not about capturing a perfect likeness but about the feeling of a moment. Like a dream you can't quite remember.
