Michael Parkes’ painting "The Guardian" presents a unique exploration of identity through its ethereal subject. Parkes, born in 1944, situates his work in a space between fantasy and reality, often drawing from various spiritual and philosophical traditions. Here, the guardian figure, with delicate wings and flowing robes, embodies a sense of protection and care as she cradles the earth. Parkes has said his interest is in "revealing the possibilities of another reality." Note how the feminine figure gently holds the globe in her hands. In doing so, she challenges traditional patriarchal narratives by presenting a softer, nurturing vision of power. The painting invites us to reflect on our own roles as guardians, both of ourselves and of the world around us. It considers how we can approach the future with a sense of responsibility, and empathy, while touching upon the emotional connection between humanity and the earth.
