This is a lithograph from the early twentieth century, titled “The Clever Cyclist” and “The Sowers” by the artist Augé. This piece offers a commentary on social behaviour at the time. The work employs caricature to critique those who lack consideration for others. In the first part, "The Clever Cyclist," we see a series of scenarios depicting cyclists behaving inconsiderately, creating hazards for others. Then, the bottom half is “The Sowers”, here we see two men deliberately spreading tacks on the road to cause flat tires. Made in a time of increasing urbanization and industrialization, it reflects anxieties about changing social norms and the loss of communal values. The print functions as a moralizing lesson, cautioning against selfishness and disregard for the well-being of others. We can examine the historical context of this artwork by researching social etiquette guides and public safety campaigns from the period. These resources shed light on the cultural values of the time. They also allow us to understand how individuals were expected to behave in public spaces.
