Winold Reiss designed this perspective drawing of the Mack delivery truck advertising Ruppert Beer and Ale with what looks like pencil and gouache. I can picture Reiss in his studio, thinking about typography and graphic design, trying to capture the essence of the brand but also thinking about movement, how the image will look speeding across town delivering beer. The design has these beautiful, clear lines - you can imagine the artist carefully sketching each form. How different this is to my own process – throwing paint at a canvas and seeing what emerges! Yet, like Reiss, I am also interested in the relationship between form and function. Here, it’s about capturing the public’s attention, making the viewer thirsty. Reiss was designing a new reality, just like many artists who inspire each other across time. Ultimately, art is a conversation, a back-and-forth of ideas and forms. This image isn't just a design; it's a moment of creative expression.
