Christian Attersee created this painting, "Apollon's Tongue," using fluid brushstrokes of oil paint on canvas. Attersee’s style, often described as dreamlike and surreal, challenges the boundaries between representation and abstraction. The gestural application of the paint is evident throughout the work. We see a layering of hues, where the material qualities of oil paint – its viscosity and capacity for blending – are exploited to create a sense of depth and movement. The artist’s process involves both control and spontaneity, the forms emerging from a dance between intention and the inherent properties of the medium. This speaks to the artist’s intimate relationship with his materials and the physical act of painting. The work, with its references to landscape and mythology, defies easy categorization. Attersee prompts us to look beyond conventional hierarchies of art, inviting appreciation of the creative act itself.
