About this artwork

Rudolf Stang designed this 50 gulden banknote for the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The design offers a glimpse into the values and ideals of Dutch society during the late 19th century. On the left, a female figure stands tall, draped in classical garb, bearing a spear and a flag while a regal lion sits beside her. This is the Dutch Maiden, a national personification but also a symbol of patriotism and virtue. Note how she embodies strength and resolve, yet remains an allegorical figure, distancing her from the everyday lives of women in the Netherlands at the time. It raises questions about who is truly represented and valued within the nation’s economic and social structures. On the right, a portrait of a bearded man, likely a member of the Dutch royalty, reinforces the prevailing power structures. The juxtaposition of these figures prompts us to consider the complex relationship between national identity, power, and representation.
