Somewhere, at some time, Werner Peiner made this painting of a mountain landscape at sunset. It’s got this incredible orangey, reddish glow, doesn’t it? Imagine Peiner standing before the canvas, brush in hand, trying to capture the fleeting light. You know, that moment when the sun dips below the horizon, casting long shadows and turning everything golden? The mountains in the distance, capped with snow, must have presented such a challenge. How do you capture that kind of light and space? And then there are the rocks in the foreground. He renders them with such care. You can almost feel the texture, the weight. I wonder if he mixed some sand into the paint to achieve that roughness? It’s funny how a simple gesture, a brushstroke, can communicate so much – a feeling, an intention, a memory. It makes me think about other landscape painters, like Caspar David Friedrich, who were also trying to capture the sublime in nature. It's all one big conversation.
