Robert Grosvenor made this Untitled sculpture out of painted metal. That horizontal beam of yellow cuts across the green, like a thought interrupting a daydream. Grosvenor is so good with colour, its all about relationships, and that vivid yellow against the pastoral scene just makes you stop and think. The texture, the flatness of the planes, the way the sunlight reflects off the surface, it all points to a real sensitivity to materials. The angle is so striking - that bar pointing skyward. You could look at so many of his works, from the 60's to now, and see him working with similar ideas, the contrast between industrial materials and more fluid forms. But it reminds me of Sol LeWitt's structures, that same interest in geometry and the grid. And like LeWitt, Grosvenor's work invites us to see the world in a new way, one that is both logical and intuitive, formal and completely open to interpretation.
