This photograph of Captain Johannessen was taken sometime in the late 19th or early 20th century by an anonymous photographer. I look at the image and I wonder what it would have been like to sail with Captain Johannessen on the S.S. Vega. It must have been quite the adventure traveling to remote regions of the Arctic! What was it like? Who was he? Was he scared? Exhilarated? I imagine the photographer might have been thinking about this too. The black and white tones create a classic and timeless feel, while the captain's pose gives us a glimpse into his personality and the spirit of maritime exploration. I love how this photograph reminds me of old stories of exploration and discovery, when artists like this one documented their world, connecting with and inspiring new audiences and creative minds across time.
