Leo Gestel made this sketch, titled "Two Nude Women," with graphite on paper. Look at how the lines are so free, almost scribbled, as if he’s thinking through the forms right in front of us. The texture of the paper peeks through, giving the figures a ghost-like presence, like they're emerging from the page. See how the lines don't always connect? It's like Gestel is inviting us to complete the image in our own minds. The sketchy quality reminds me of some of Guston's later work, where the messiness becomes the message. Gestel's choice to leave the drawing so raw and unfinished feels incredibly modern. It's less about perfection and more about the act of seeing and translating that onto paper. This kind of openness is what makes art so exciting – it's an ongoing dialogue, a conversation that never really ends.
