Etienne Picart created this print of Christ enthroned in the late 17th or early 18th century. Born into a world of religious and political upheaval, Picart navigated his career through complex social structures. In this print, Christ is depicted as a divine authority, seated on a throne and surrounded by classical architectural elements which serve to legitimize his power. Note how the figure of Christ is idealized, his gender presented in a way that reinforces traditional patriarchal norms. Yet, there’s also a tenderness in his gaze. The inscription “Verbum vivificans” – The Word gives life – suggests a message of hope and renewal. Picart, working within the confines of his time, both perpetuated and subtly challenged prevailing representations. The emotional depth he brings to this image invites us to reflect on the complexities of faith, power, and representation.
