Claude Déruet painted this oil on canvas, "The Battle Between the Amazons and the Greeks," in the first half of the 17th century. The subject matter here, a famous battle from Greek mythology, is of course a window into the classical learning that was a benchmark of elite culture in France and much of Europe at this time. However, we can see the concerns of the time in which it was produced by the way Déruet has staged the scene. The painting is very theatrical, almost like a stage set, with a high horizon line and a backdrop of monumental architecture. This gives a sense of grandeur and power, which would be expected in a painting made during the Baroque era, when monarchs across Europe were trying to create imposing visual cultures to reflect their authority. To understand this work fully, we would want to dig into the court culture of the French Baroque and the ways in which artists were used to construct a sense of royal authority. The Bibliothèque Nationale de France would be the perfect place to begin such a research project!
