This delicate etching of two girls was made by Christina Chalon in the late 1700s. Etching is an intaglio printmaking technique. A metal plate is coated with a waxy, acid-resistant substance, and the artist draws through this coating with a sharp needle, exposing the metal. The plate is then immersed in acid, which bites into the exposed lines. Ink is applied to the plate, filling the etched lines, and the surface is wiped clean. Finally, the plate is pressed onto paper, transferring the ink and creating the print. Here, Chalon uses the etching process with great skill to create a detailed image of these two young girls. The subtle lines create texture and depth, particularly in the rendering of their clothing. Etching allows for the creation of multiples, making art more accessible. In Chalon's time, this meant that images could circulate more widely, influencing taste and spreading ideas. And that is why materials, making, and context are key to understand the full meaning of the artwork.
