Shitao, a Chinese landscape painter and calligrapher, made "10,000 Ugly Inkblots", though the exact date is unknown. The work's title is a provocation, seemingly downplaying Shitao's skill while speaking to a time of political unrest. He was a member of the royal family of the Ming dynasty. When the Ming were overthrown by the Qing dynasty, Shitao, as a Han Chinese man, was expected to either serve the new dynasty or retire. Shitao chose to become a Buddhist monk, as a means of resistance. As a monk, he traveled throughout China, taking inspiration from its landscapes. "10,000 Ugly Inkblots" demonstrates Shitao's mastery of "xieyi," or "sketching thoughts," an approach that prioritizes personal expression. He subverts the established style of landscape painting to create an emotionally resonant experience. In viewing this piece, consider how Shitao embraces imperfection and individuality, turning away from the rigid structures of society, choosing instead, freedom, and the messy beauty of life.
