Kapousouz made this watercolor of a doll sometime between 1855 and 1995. The paintwork feels so delicate, so tentative. Like the artist is feeling their way into the subject, figuring it out as they go. Look at the way the colors are laid down. They bleed into each other, creating these soft, fuzzy edges. It's like the doll is dissolving into the background, or maybe emerging from it. And those stripes on the skirt, how they waver and wobble, never quite straight. It’s the wobble that gets me. It's not about precision. It's about a feeling. The whole thing has this ethereal quality, like a memory fading at the edges. It reminds me a little of Redon, that same dreamy, otherworldly vibe. But where Redon goes for high drama, Kapousouz keeps it simple, personal, and all the more affecting. It's a reminder that art isn't about answers; it's about questions, about seeing the world in new ways, about embracing the beautiful mess of it all.
