Charles Caseau made this drawing of a candlestick, we don't know when, using what looks like watercolor on paper. The light blue is so delicate it feels like it could almost float off the page. I love how the subtle gradations give volume to something that’s essentially flat. Look at the base, those little curves are so gently rendered. It's like Caseau is caressing the form with the brush. There's a real love of process here, you can feel the artist exploring the object, figuring it out as he goes. The candlestick almost feels alive. It makes me think of Giorgio Morandi, another artist who spent his life finding endless variation in simple objects. Both artists remind us that art isn't about grand gestures or dramatic statements, it's about paying attention, about looking closely, and finding beauty in the everyday.
