Willard Metcalf made Winter in New Hampshire with oil on canvas, we don't know exactly when. The strokes here are so light, almost feathery, it's like Metcalf is trying to catch the fleeting quality of light on snow. The colors are a little unexpected; not just white, but lilacs and blues, which give the snow a cool, reflective quality. Look closely at the shadows. See how they're not just gray, but full of violet hues? It's interesting how he's built up the surface, with short, broken strokes of paint that create a shimmering effect, almost like the snow is alive. It reminds me of Monet. Art doesn't give us answers, but it gives us space to ask questions.
