Antoine Jacquard created this engraving titled "Lucretia?" sometime between 1620 and 1650. It depicts a scene where Lucretia is confronted by men outside her home. The story of Lucretia was often told in early modern Europe. She was seen as the ideal woman: beautiful, dutiful, and loyal. But her story is also a narrative of sexual violence. After being raped by Sextus Tarquinius, she told her husband and then killed herself. Her suicide sparked a revolt that led to the overthrow of the Roman monarchy. The image raises many questions about the representation of women, honor, and power. Jacquard's print invites us to consider how Lucretia’s story has been used to both uphold and challenge social norms and how gender, class and power intersect in the construction of historical narratives.
