This drawing, *Interieur met een briefschrijvende vrouw, een wachtende man en twee toeschouwers* by Gerard ter Borch (1617-1681), is a quick sketch of a scene taking place in a Dutch interior. The work is in the style of a *genre painting*, a popular form of art in the 17th century in the Netherlands. It depicts a scene from daily life, in this case a woman writing a letter with a man and two others looking on. The artwork is located in the Rijksmuseum. It is only 187 mm high and 191 mm wide. The quick, loose lines of the drawing capture the movement and energy of the scene. The work is an important example of the use of drawing as a preliminary study for a painting.
