Carel Christiaan Antony Last created "Vissersboot in reparatie" with pen in gray ink. The drawing presents a detailed scene dominated by a large fishing boat undergoing repair. The composition is structured by the vertical masts of the boat and the horizontal logs in the foreground. Last’s approach in organizing the composition is a study in contrasts. Note the rough texture of the wooden hull achieved through dense, rhythmic pen strokes, contrasted against the smoother, more delicately rendered background. The linear precision of the drawing style, reminiscent of architectural renderings, introduces a sense of order to a scene of manual labor. The detailed linework captures the structural integrity of the boat, set against a backdrop of daily life along the shore. Notice the use of hatching and cross-hatching. It is not just a technique for creating depth but also a means of emphasizing the materiality of the boat. The materiality highlights the labor and craftsmanship involved in maritime life, an interplay that enriches the historical and cultural context of the scene.
