This mosaic was created by Byzantine artists to decorate the floor of the Beth Alpha synagogue in Beit She'an, Israel. It is one of many works of art which challenges us to broaden our idea of what constitutes 'Jewish Art.' Here we see Helios, the Greek sun god, in his chariot. The presence of Helios in a synagogue raises interesting questions about cultural exchange and adaptation in late antiquity. How did the Jewish community of Beth Alpha reconcile the depiction of a pagan deity with their religious beliefs? Was it simply a decorative motif borrowed from the surrounding culture, or did it hold a deeper symbolic meaning within its Jewish context? To understand the role of art in this community, we must look to sources beyond the artwork itself. Archaeological reports, religious texts, and social histories can help us understand the place of the Beth Alpha Synagogue within its wider social and institutional context. By understanding this artwork, we gain insight into the complex religious and cultural landscape of the Byzantine Empire.
