This photo shows the Grafmonument van Jan II van Polanen in the Grote Kerk te Breda as seen through the lens of an anonymous photographer. Looking at this image, I imagine the photographer carefully composing the shot, probably using a large format camera. The monument itself is all about stone, hard stone worked into circles and patterns. I feel the weight and coolness of the stone. I can imagine the original sculptor carefully carving, taking away what was not needed, finding the forms, one after another, that make up the repetitive patterns. Each shape probably took a lot of time. It must have been a meditative process of slowly revealing form. It’s interesting to imagine how a sculptor thinks when they make something like this, and how that relates to what other artists do. How does this image resonate with what I do when I am in the studio with paint? I suppose we are all slowly revealing form.
