I find that Moran and his contemporaries like Albert Bierstadt really popularized these vast, romantic landscape paintings in America during a key period of national identity formation. They shaped the country’s view of itself and its relationship with the environment, particularly the still largely untamed American West. Editor: Untamed is doing a lot of work here! These paintings always bring up a lot of difficult questions about colonization, extraction, and ultimately a vision of landscape devoid of any Indigenous presence or claim to the land. It creates this false sense of pristine wilderness for the taking. Curator: That’s a really important point. In terms of style, there's certainly that drama you mentioned in the composition—the use of light and shadow to emphasize the scale. The sky feels turbulent and vast and almost divine. There's that wonderful balance between the detailed foreground, with those rocky outcroppings, the vegetation, and the hazier, almost dreamlike mountains fading into the background. Editor: And there’s such a sharp distinction in textures. Looking at the foliage on the right, and the light catching the water running over the rocks on the left. The use of texture gives the impression of the cool air, even a hint of dampness. I think paintings like these are beautiful, sure, but they actively work to conceal so many inconvenient realities. They present nature as something "out there" to be consumed, an attitude we’re only now really grappling with. Curator: I suppose that is the core contradiction isn’t it? The monumental scale becomes another symbol of dominion, even as it purports to capture nature's untouched grandeur. Editor: Exactly. So much is revealed by looking past the beautiful technique, into the history these artworks carry. Curator: Precisely. "The White Mountains", whether it fully delivers on this or not, allows us to hold seemingly disparate ideas in tension and discuss their cultural implications in real time.
