Patricq Kroon made this comical drawing of a minister and a priest at an undetermined date using ink and watercolour on paper. The artist’s hand is clearly visible, particularly in the expressive hatching, the bold outlines and confident application of colour. I can imagine Kroon working quickly, trying to capture the essence of his subjects, their expressions, and perhaps a tension in their relationship. I wonder what he was thinking about when he made it? Did he find these figures ridiculous or were they powerful? Look at the priest's hands, gesturing, as if in the midst of an impassioned, almost desperate speech. There's a lot of dark ink here, especially in the priest's robes, offset by touches of white and the suggestive use of purple to define the shadows. It reminds me of Ensor’s drawings, maybe, but with a lightness and a humour that’s all Kroon’s own.
