This double flute was made by the Colima people of Mexico, using terracotta. The Colima were known for their ceramic arts, producing a range of figural sculptures and vessels, often placed in tombs. Terracotta, or earthenware, is a relatively low-fired ceramic, and the clay is readily available in the region. This makes it a common material for both utilitarian and artistic purposes. Its earthy, warm color and slightly coarse texture give it a natural feel. The flute consists of two parallel tubes joined together, each with its own set of finger holes. This implies a level of skill and precision in its making. Given its function, this flute would have been important to the Colima community – perhaps used in rituals, or for entertainment. Objects like this ask us to think beyond the typical categories of art, design, and craft. It embodies all of these things. By considering the cultural context and the technical skill, we can appreciate this flute as both a functional object and a work of art.
