This is Willem Tolhuys’s cannon called ‘Fredelant’. The material of the cannon is dense and dark with an ornately carved surface texture that communicates both artistry and destructive potential. The composition has a clear linear structure that guides the eye from the intricate details at the cannon's base, along its cylindrical body, to the muzzle. This controlled progression invites us to examine the symbolic interplay between decoration and function. The cannon is divided into sections each defined by distinct patterns and textures. These divisions aren’t purely decorative. They subtly undermine any fixed meaning we might assign to such a weapon. Through an understanding of semiotics we can appreciate how the cannon destabilizes established meanings. The cannon presents itself not just as an instrument of war but also as a complex signifier of power, craftsmanship, and perhaps, a critique of its own purpose. This layering challenges our reading and acknowledges the fluid nature of objects within a historical and cultural context.

This is the oldest known cannon inscribed with a Dutch text, which translates as: ‘Fredelant is my name’. On the barrel are the arms of the married couple Hendrik van Isendoorn à Blois and Sophia van Stommel. Hendrik owned Cannenburch Castle in Vaassen, where this little cannon stood until 1881. The decoration is in the style of the period (transition from Gothic to Renaissance), when the candlestick motifs would then have been considered very modern-looking.
