Here is a detail from a carpet, made by an unknown artist with brown, green, blue and red paint. Imagine the anonymous creator, patiently building up this design – perhaps a slow, meditative act, each pixel a decision, a tiny world in itself. I'm really drawn to that brown, it dominates the image. The way the curling, swirling forms seem to push against the edges, almost escaping the confines of the frame. There is a real tension between the decorative and the unknown. I wonder if this artist ever thought about who would eventually see this work? Did they imagine it hanging in a museum, years later, inviting us to ponder their patterns and color choices? It's like a message in a bottle, cast out to sea, waiting to be discovered and interpreted. We artists, we're all in conversation with each other, across time and space. This carpet reminds me of so much, from Agnes Martin's grids to the wild abandon of late Guston. It's all connected.
