Laura Knight made this painting of Young Gypsies with oil on canvas, and looking at it, I can see how the paint has been applied in layers, like building up a scene from memory or imagination. The warm earth tones and soft brushstrokes create a hazy, dreamlike atmosphere. I can almost feel the warmth of the sun on my skin and hear the rustling of the grass. It’s like Knight was right there with those kids, capturing their fleeting moments of childhood. I wonder what she was thinking as she painted? Did she feel a sense of kinship with these young people? Did she see something of herself in their carefree spirit? Or did she feel like an outsider, observing them from a distance? She must have admired their resilience and resourcefulness, their ability to find joy in the simple things. The way she captured the light on their faces and the texture of their clothing, it’s like she wanted to preserve a moment in time, before it vanished forever. We as painters are magpies, constantly gathering inspiration, nodding to those who came before and hoping to inspire those who will follow.
