This print presents the interior of St. Bride's Church in London. The dominant visual element is the series of arches and domes, architectural features laden with symbolic weight. The dome, historically, represents the heavens, a sacred space. Its use here reflects a desire to create a divine atmosphere. Think back to the Pantheon in Rome, where the oculus—the open eye at the dome's center—symbolizes a direct connection to the gods. This motif is found in Byzantine churches and Renaissance cathedrals, each time adapted, yet retaining that core idea of a link between the earthly and the divine. These arches evoke a sense of transcendence. This, coupled with the repetitive patterns, taps into our collective memory and subconscious yearning for order and the eternal, engaging viewers on a deep, subconscious level. The dome has resurfaced, evolved, and taken on new meanings in different historical contexts.
