Constantin Flondor’s Landscape, made at an unknown date, is a symphony of earth tones punctuated by moments of vibrant color that really gets you thinking about the process of seeing. The materiality here is so present, the way the pastel sits on the surface, almost like a tactile map of the artist’s movements. Look at the bottom of the piece, how the parallel lines evoke both a ploughed field and a sense of abstract rhythm. The turquoise pond acts like a jewel, drawing the eye amidst the muted browns and purples. Notice how the white lines dance across the top, creating a sense of depth and layering. Flondor's work reminds me a bit of Guston, in the way he uses simplified forms to convey a sense of emotional weight. It's a reminder that art is as much about feeling as it is about seeing, inviting us to find our own meanings within its hazy, dreamlike spaces.
