Maximilien Luce made this painting, Bateaux hollandais, with oil on canvas, and you can tell he was really into the process. It feels like he was thinking through paint. There's this feeling of movement in the water, achieved with these short, choppy strokes of green and blue. You can almost feel the boat bobbing. Then, your eye goes up to the sail, which is this beautiful muted purple, kind of transparent, kind of opaque. The way Luce layers the paint, you can almost see the wind catching it. Look closely, and you'll notice all these little touches of pink and yellow in the sky, reflecting on the water. It's like Luce is having a conversation with the Impressionists, but he's also doing his own thing, pushing the colors and brushstrokes in a way that feels very personal. This makes me think of Van Gogh, both artists had a way of turning something ordinary into something emotionally charged. It's like they're saying, "Hey, look at this world, isn't it amazing?"
