Dobri Dobrev made this painting, In Prague, with oils, and what I notice first is the way the colours are laid down softly, as if he’s inviting us into a hazy memory. The muted palette makes me think of a dream, or maybe a half-remembered photograph. Looking closer, I see how the textures give the painting its life. There's a real contrast between the smooth washes of the sky and the impasto dabs of paint on the buildings. You can almost feel the roughness of the stone and the way the light catches on those surfaces. Look at how the brushwork around the edges of the buildings is blurred, creating a sense of atmosphere. It's as if the buildings are breathing, part of the environment. This makes me think of Corot, with the way he used light and atmosphere to create a mood. Both artists understand that painting is more than just representation; it's about capturing a feeling, an experience. Ultimately, this painting reminds me that art is an ongoing conversation, a way of seeing and feeling that evolves over time.
