Curatorial notes

This engraving, Mirakel op het slagveld, was made by Theodoor Galle in the Netherlands sometime between the late 16th and early 17th century. It's an image thick with Catholic imagery, and presents a scene of miraculous intervention on the battlefield. In the engraving, we see the Virgin Mary in the clouds, angels, and a soldier on horseback carrying a banner. The image creates meaning through visual codes, cultural references, and historical associations. Consider the context: the Netherlands at this time was embroiled in the Eighty Years' War, a fight for independence from Spain that had strong religious undertones. Catholicism was heavily associated with the Spanish rulers, against whom the Protestant Dutch were rebelling. Prints like these would have served as propaganda, strengthening a sense of divine support for the Catholic cause. The social conditions shaped artistic production to serve political ends, reflecting and reinforcing the religious and political tensions of the time. As historians, we consult archives and libraries to understand the context that shapes artistic production and reception.
