Johann Sadeler I created this engraving, "Visitatie," sometime before his death in 1601. It depicts the meeting of Mary and Elizabeth, both pregnant, an iconic scene in Christian art, laden with the promise of new life and divine intervention. Sadeler was working in an era marked by religious upheaval. The Protestant Reformation challenged the Catholic Church's authority, leading to the Counter-Reformation. This print, produced during that time, invites us to consider the role of women in religious narratives. Mary and Elizabeth, in their pregnancies, embody hope and renewal, but they are also figures of female strength in a patriarchal society. Their meeting is more than a simple greeting; it's a powerful moment of recognition and solidarity. This image encourages us to reflect on the women's agency and faith, set against the backdrop of religious and social transformation. It leaves me to consider how these women navigated a complex world, pregnant and faithful.
