This drawing by Ludovico Carracci, a leading artist of the late Italian Renaissance, depicts the biblical story of the Conversion of Saint Paul. The drawing, dated 1582–94, illustrates the moment when Paul, a persecutor of Christians, is blinded by a divine light while traveling to Damascus. Carracci’s depiction of the dramatic event is masterfully rendered in brown ink and wash, using dynamic lines and chiaroscuro to convey the intensity of the moment. The central figure of Paul, rendered in a dynamic pose, is dramatically illuminated by the light emanating from the heavenly figure above. The drawing is a preparatory study for a larger painting, and as such, it reveals Carracci’s careful planning and meticulous attention to detail. It is a powerful example of Carracci's ability to capture the drama and emotion of a biblical scene.
