This polychrome pitcher was crafted in Cholula, Mexico. Notice the face near the bottom, its gaze looking into an otherworldly dimension. The face—a motif as ancient as civilization itself—appears throughout human history, from the masks of ancient rituals to the prows of ships warding off malevolent spirits. Here, it serves as a symbol of protection, perhaps an ancestor watching over the vessel's contents, ensuring purity and safety. This recurs, connecting us to our roots, revealing a collective desire for security. Yet, the face is not merely a guardian. In its gaze, there is a hint of melancholy, a subtle reminder of mortality. Like the Roman memento mori, it compels us to reflect on the transient nature of existence. It’s a constant reminder that even in moments of joy and sustenance, the shadow of impermanence lingers. This dual symbolism creates tension in the viewer, evoking profound emotions.
