Curatorial notes

This is a photogravure by Alexis Mazourine called "Trojka met twee paarden in de sneeuw." Although undated, Mazourine was active in Russia during a time of significant social upheaval and revolutionary fervor. Against a snowy backdrop, a troika, a traditional Russian carriage drawn by three horses, moves away from us towards a distant church. While this artwork seems to simply depict a winter scene, consider the historical context. During Mazourine's time, the troika was a potent symbol of Russian identity and the vastness of its territories. The church in the background reminds us of the deep connections between Russian culture and Orthodox Christianity. The figures in the troika are anonymous, their faces obscured. Are they peasants, merchants, or members of the aristocracy? This ambiguity invites us to reflect on the complexities of Russian society. It evokes a sense of longing, but also perhaps, a sense of unease.
