Jaeger & Goergen captured this church interior in a photograph with an extraordinary level of detail, as if built from tiny marks in the darkroom. The tonality of the image is what grips me. Everything seems to fall within a narrow register of light and dark. It makes me think about the relationship between the architecture and the ephemeral nature of light. I keep thinking, how can something so solid, so permanent, appear so light and airy? Look at the floral arrangement. It mirrors the forms and rhythm of the architecture. A lovely contrast, but in the end, the whole structure is ephemeral, like a dream. I’m reminded of Atget, who had a similar way of capturing the presence of absence in the Parisian landscape. It's like they're saying, “Everything you see is temporary.”
