Theo van Hoytema created this print of three flying birds with lithography, a process that allows for incredibly fine detail. Here, that process is critical to our appreciation. Look closely, and you’ll see how Hoytema has used the texture of the lithographic stone to his advantage. He draws our attention to the intricate plumage of the birds, the subtle gradations of tone giving the impression of depth and movement. Each feather seems individually rendered, evidence of the artist's skill and patience. The layering of the birds creates a sense of dynamic energy, their forms intersecting and overlapping. Given that Hoytema was working at a time when the division between fine art and commercial design was becoming increasingly blurred, it is perhaps no surprise that he made his living designing calendars and illustrating books. Ultimately, understanding the labor and material that went into this print enriches our appreciation, challenging any preconceived notions about artistic hierarchies.
