Thomas Truxton Kendrick’s “Jar” is a simple yet striking example of American stoneware from the mid-19th century. The rounded form of the jar is accented by the dripping, brown glaze that suggests the haphazard application of the glaze and a commitment to function over form. The piece is now part of the collection of the Art Institute of Chicago. American stoneware, often characterized by its utilitarian nature and the use of local materials, continues to be a popular field of study for art historians.
