John Miller created "Sunrise of Wonder VI" using paint to explore the visual codes of landscapes and our emotional relationship to them. Miller's serene composition, made up of a vivid blue sky with the horizon line and a vibrant sun, evokes a sense of calm, a world reduced to its essence. The painting simplifies nature, but this also invites us to consider the role of the environment in our lives. What does this idealised sunrise tell us about our yearning for a world that is untouched by our modern, industrialised society? As an art historian, I would want to investigate Miller’s personal connection to nature, as well as broader cultural attitudes of his time. We might want to consider what role institutions such as environmental movements had in shaping an artist’s point of view at the time. After all, the meaning of art is always contingent on social and institutional contexts.
