Alfred Freddy Krupa made this small ink drawing, titled ‘A Boat,’ using a quick, intuitive approach. It's all about the process, really. The ink bleeds and pools, creating depth and shadow with the bare minimum of means. Look at the way the ink splatters and spreads, the texture of the paper almost seems to grab at the pigment. The surface is alive with subtle gradations. Take the solid shape to the top right of the image; the way it thins into the line that swoops from the top of the drawing, it is almost like he is daring the paint to hold its own. This piece reminds me of some of the Abstract Expressionist drawings of the 40's. Like them, it feels urgent and alive. It celebrates a freedom of interpretation, resisting any single meaning.
