Editor: So, this is Jacques Callot's "Saint Scholasticus," an engraving. It's incredibly detailed, even at that small size. The saint's looking up, seemingly in awe. What strikes you when you look at this print? Curator: The upward gaze, precisely. It invites us to consider our own spiritual yearning. Notice the dove, too; the divine entering the earthly realm. How does that make you feel? Editor: It feels…hopeful, I guess? Is that what Callot intended? Curator: Perhaps. Or perhaps he simply wanted to capture a moment of intense faith. It's in the eye of the beholder, isn't it? Editor: I guess so! I see something new each time I look. Curator: Exactly! And that's the enduring power of art.
