This print was made by Lubomír Jarcovják. It's called Untitled and we don't know exactly when it was made. I love how the image hovers between abstraction and representation. Is it a landscape, a flag, or just a series of dark lines? The colour palette here is very limited, but it gives the piece a real warmth and earthiness. You can almost smell the soil. Look at how the ink lies on the surface, thick in some areas, thin and transparent in others. The texture of the paper also plays a big part, creating a sort of broken or worn surface. There are also some nice accidental marks that really add to the overall feeling of the piece. It's as though Jarcovják is having a conversation with the materials. Jarcovják's work makes me think of Gerhard Richter, who also played with abstraction and figuration. But Jarcovják has his own thing going on, his own way of seeing and making. It’s a reminder that art is never really finished.
