Here we see a drawing of a man in profile, Krumauer Verwandter des Künstlers, by Egon Schiele. Schiele was an Austrian Expressionist painter who often turned to himself and those closest to him as subjects. This work gives us insight into Schiele's personal relationships and how he saw those in his intimate sphere. The angular lines and intense gaze are typical of Schiele's portraits, which often convey a sense of psychological depth and emotional intensity. Schiele was interested in the human form and the human psyche. While he was interested in the conventional portrait, he seems to challenge the traditional, more formal portraiture of the time through the expression of his emotions. By portraying the inner states of his subjects, Schiele invites us to consider our own complex emotions and relationships.
