John Bauer rendered Odin and Sleipnir, sometime around 1900 using monochrome paint and ink. It's fascinating how he used a limited palette to create such a dynamic scene. Bauer really emphasizes the physicality of the medium. Look at the textures he achieves, especially in the horse's mane—those flowing, almost wave-like strokes. You can almost feel the wind rushing through it. There's a stark contrast between the upper and lower halves of the composition. The darkness below, the hidden figure, adds a layer of mystery and depth that draws you in. The way he handles the light and shadow gives everything a kind of ghostly presence. Bauer reminds me of other illustrators like Arthur Rackham, who were also steeped in folklore and fairytale. There's a sense of art as an ongoing conversation, building on the stories and styles of those who came before.
