Olivier Debré created 'Rouge l'automne touraine' with paint on canvas, in a manner that speaks to the post-war desire to rebuild identity through abstraction. Debré came of age during a time of enormous upheaval in France, and across Europe; the devastation of World War II touched everything, especially one's sense of self. Looking at this canvas, we see how Debré uses the color red to evoke a feeling. For Debré, color and gesture were the means to capture what he called the 'corporeal' aspect of painting; a way to engage directly with the viewer’s senses and emotions. Debré’s gestural abstraction can be understood as a deeply personal, visceral response to a world forever changed by violence, an emotional and artistic effort to make sense of both beauty and trauma.
