Pieter van Schuppen created this portrait of Eustache Teissier, Master General of the Order of the Trinitarians, using engraving. The Order of the Trinitarians, devoted to ransoming Christians enslaved by Muslims, provides a powerful historical lens through which to view this piece. Teissier’s gaze meets ours, framed by the symbols of his office, inviting contemplation on power, faith, and freedom during a period marked by religious conflict and colonial expansion. Consider the emotional weight carried by those ransomed and those left behind, and the complex negotiations between freedom and subjugation. This portrait serves not only as a record of Teissier’s position but also as a focal point for reflecting on the intersections of religious identity, social justice, and the human cost of historical conflicts.
