Grandma Moses, bless her heart, painted 'The Spring in Evening' with the kind of ease that makes you think anyone could do it, but of course, they can't. There's this beautiful simplicity in her brushstrokes, a kind of unpretentious honesty. Look at the way she renders the sky – those soft pinks and blues kind of bleed into each other, so tenderly. It feels like memory, doesn’t it? The paint is applied thinly, almost like watercolor in places, which gives the whole scene an airy, dreamlike quality. The little figures and houses dotting the landscape are charmingly naive, like something out of a storybook. I love how the road meanders through the scene, inviting you to wander around this painted world. You can almost feel the warmth of the evening sun. It reminds me a bit of Breugel, with that same love for the everyday. Moses' work is a reminder that art doesn't need to be complicated to be deeply moving.
