Editor: So, here we have an albumen print called "Fietsers in het Bois de Boulogne in Parijs, Frankrijk," which translates to "Cyclists in the Bois de Boulogne in Paris, France," dated before 1896. The black and white gives it a wonderful vintage feel. What catches your eye when you look at this? Curator: Oh, this takes me back! There's a delicate charm here. For me, it's that sliver of everyday life caught in a fleeting moment. Not just bicycles, mind you – the sheer delight of cycling! It speaks to a period infatuated with speed and freedom, something utterly new then. It makes me wonder, what were their dreams as they pedaled through that Parisian park? Editor: It's funny you say that, because I almost missed that this was in a park. It seems quite devoid of nature and presence of space... I'm mostly taken by the bikes and their odd-looking structures. Why highlight such a relatively novel invention, as opposed to more classical representations of the time? Curator: Because invention *was* the spirit of the time. It's interesting to remember that even parks were sites for witnessing these societal transformations. And this image flirts with both landscape *and* portraiture. The backdrop is less about geographical specificity and more about an idyllic backdrop, but this only further heightens the significance of the subjects within! A little nod to Ukiyo-e maybe, what do you think? Editor: That’s a connection I wouldn't have made myself but that seems appropriate, since there are a lot of art nouveau influences here, including Japonisme as a major aesthetic paradigm... thanks for broadening my perspective! Curator: The pleasure's all mine, it's like stumbling upon an old diary, each page revealing untold stories in the simplest form.
